Xingjie is third generation new money, thanks to a massive and mysterious windfall bestowed upon his grandfather. Xingjie's parents immigrated from Zhejiang Province to Ikebukuro shortly after they married. He was born a few years later, remains the only child, and has grown up never needing anything in life. It shows.
At first glance, Xingjie comes off as a bit of an asshole. Don't let that fool you, because he is an asshole. His parents are also Not Really Great People, and he's never learned to be any better because he's usually hanging out with other new money, flaunting and preening and trying to outspend each other. He isn't that great with personal responsibility or hearing the word no, but he realizes it's a problem, even if he isn't doing much to fix it.

during china's tang dynasty, a young monk named yuanzang resided in a village now located in present-day zhejiang province. each passing day brought more news of malevolent spirits and fallen celestial beings terrorizing or corrupting humans in the area. despite his limitations as a human, yuanzang was determined to fight against the evils in the world. his dedication to preserving human life caught the attention of [redacted].
yuanzang was gifted abilities that gave him the strength to oppose darkness, while also allowing him to safeguard and tend to the humans around him. however, this came at the expense of his own physical and mental well-being; yuanzang's true powers could only be summoned by spilling his own blood, enticing creatures beyond what his presence now did naturally. while yuanzang's blood could cause harm to any creature he went up against, his body had also become such a holy vessel that should any creature consume his flesh, they would be cleansed of their sins, granted immense power, and in some cases, obtain immortality.
yuanzang's descendants were forced to carry the same weight, entirely against their will. multitudes disappeared without a trace, seized by opportunistic enemies, and no peace could be found for those who wished to live quietly. desperate, one descendant approached the deity, pleading for mercy.
in exchange for the promise of continued service, the deity sealed the abilities of all but the one who had approached him. upon the man's death, another who shared his blood would be conscripted as a replacement. unfortunately, the inheritor would remain unknown until the moment of the previous holder's death.
while yuanzang's story is known to a variety of creatures, many of them see it as nothing more than a fairy tale. however, some swear they've encountered a hunter whose blood draws them in as strongly as any human drug.
